Cornish Skimmed Milk - Fresh & Tasty - Cornish Dairy Co

Trewithen Dairy is now Cornish Dairy Co!

Cornish Skimmed Milk

Our delicious skimmed milk comes fresh from local Cornish farms, where cows graze on lush pastures and are cared for to high welfare standards. The result? Naturally wholesome milk that tastes just as good in your tea as it does by the glass.

Deliciously creamy

Our Cornish milk comes from our own directly contracted farmers, all based within a 25-mile radius of our dairy. We are caretakers of the land; we and our farmers recognise the need to look after the environment for future generations.

Being stuck out into the Atlantic Ocean has shaped so much of Cornwall’s geography and its history. Storm systems sweep in on the jet stream, sucking up salts and nutrients from the sea and the mild coastal air forces the moisture to fall as rain. Deep river valleys and undulating uplands create a unique grass-growing landscape for dairy faming, which in turn creates the delicious flavour of our milk.

A mix of dairy herds

Our milk comes from a mix of dairy herds; Brown Swiss, Friesian, Holsteins and Jerseys. It is this teamwork between us and our farmers which ensures the cows have the right diet, care and attention to produce perfectly balanced milk every time.

Fun fact: Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Cornwall’s landscape and climate is shaped by ocean-fed storms bringing mineral rich rain and mild coastal air. This creates lush valleys and rolling pastures ideal for dairy farming and gives our milk its delicious flavour.

What are the Cornish Dairy Co farming standards?

Wherever possible our cows graze on pastures and this is independently audited as part of the annual Red Tractor audit.

Although no two Cornish Dairy Co farms are the same, all our farmers share a common set of values and comply with a comprehensive set of standards that ensure high levels of animal health, welfare and husbandry.

We share our farmers commitment to continuous improvement in the area of animal health and welfare. As such, we are determined to work with and support them, to ensure that their on-farm practices and performance levels meet the expectation of our customers and ultimately those who consume our products.

What’s the best way to recycle milk bottles?

They crush down perfectly just as they are and can be left with your council recycling collection. The lids can be recycled too.

What is skimmed milk and how is it made?

Skimmed milk is a low-calorie and low-fat version of traditional full-fat milk. Skimmed milk is prepared through the process of centrifugal separation where only fat molecules are extracted from the milk. Skimmed milk is made by removing the layer of milk fat, known as the cream, from whole milk. To remove the cream, milk is placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the milk, and the cream is separated from the rest of the milk.

Does skimmed milk have the same nutritional value as whole milk?

Unlike what many people believe, skimmed milk contains the majority of nutrients of regular milk and is not “watered down”. Skim milk is also considered a nutrient-dense ingredient, meaning it provides a large dose of vitamins and minerals with very few calories. In fact, skimmed milk is one of the richest food sources of calcium, providing around 325 mg per cup! This is even higher than the calcium content of whole milk, which is 306 mg per cup.

Who should not drink skimmed milk?

Children under the age of two years should not drink skimmed milk as it does not have enough fat required for infant’s healthy growth. Babies and toddlers are thought to benefit from the fat and protein in whole milk more than adults. Because they grow and develop so quickly, their bodies need the saturated fats found in whole milk.

What can I use skimmed milk for?

Skimmed milk can be used in the same ways as whole milk – in cereals, coffee, tea, baking, cooking, and smoothies. It’s particularly beneficial for those looking to reduce calories and fat intake while maintaining protein and calcium consumption.
