Cornish Salted Butter

Our salted butter is rich, creamy and unmistakably golden – churned from the finest Cornish cream for a naturally buttercup colour and smooth, spreadable texture. Perfectly balanced with a touch of salt, it’s delicious lathered onto warm crumpets, spread thick on a fresh saffron bun, or melted over hot toast.

What is Cornish Salted Butter?

Cornish salted butter is a traditional block butter made from the milk of dairy herds across Cornwall, with a minimum fat content of 80% and a light salt content for a well-balanced, savoury finish. It has a dense, velvety texture and a deep yellow hue, giving it a full-bodied flavour that holds up well whether it’s stirred through a sauce, folded into pastry, or simply enjoyed straight from the block. As a staple Cornish dairy product, it reflects the quality of milk that goes into every batch.

What Makes the Salted Butter “Cornish”?

What sets this butter apart is where the cream comes from. It’s churned using fresh Cornish cream sourced from local Cornish herds, with all our contracted farms based within 25 miles of the dairy in Lostwithiel. That closeness means every batch of cream is fresher, and it lets us work directly with the farmers behind it. We regularly visit the herds to make sure the milk that goes into our butter meets the highest standards for animal welfare and quality, audited annually under the Red Tractor scheme.

Our Award-Winning Quality

Our best salted butter has been recognised with a 2-star Great Taste Award, one of the food industry’s most respected marks of quality. It achieved ‘outstanding’ in the judges’ blind taste tests (less than 10% of all 14,113 entries received this impressive rating!). It’s an honour judged by taste alone, which makes it a mark we’re immensely proud to carry.

How Cornish Salted Butter Is Made

It starts with milk fresh from the herds grazing our Cornish farms so it arrives while it’s still at its best. That milk is separated and churned slowly, the way butter’s always been made, letting the natural cream come together into something firm and glossy. A gentle measure of salt is worked through at the end, just enough to bring out the flavour without overpowering it.

The result is a butter that carries the character of the Cornish countryside it comes from, batch after batch.

Ways To Use Salted Butter

Salted butter earns its place in the kitchen far beyond the breadboard. Melt a knob into mashed potato for extra richness, or let it sizzle in the pan when frying eggs, mushrooms or a Sunday morning bacon sarnie. Our salted butter is just as at home in baking when creamed into scones, worked through shortbread, or brushed over the top of a pasty crust for that golden finish. For something simple, stir a little through steamed vegetables or new potatoes, or use it to finish off a pan sauce for extra depth and gloss. However it’s used, a good salted butter brings a rounded, savoury edge that ties a dish together.

FAQs

What’s the difference between salted butter and regular butter?

“Regular butter” usually means unsalted butter  – just churned cream with nothing added. Salted butter has a small amount of salt worked through it (around 1.5–1.8%), which adds flavour and helps it keep a little longer. Both are made the same way otherwise.

Is salted butter better for you?

Nutritionally, salted and unsalted butter are almost identical – the main difference is the added salt content. Salted butter contributes a small amount to your daily salt intake, so unsalted is sometimes preferred for those watching sodium, but neither is inherently “healthier” in terms of fat or calories.

What is salted butter for?

Salted butter is an everyday, all-purpose butter – ideal for spreading on toast, crumpets or bread, melting over vegetables and potatoes, and using in general cooking where a touch of extra flavour is welcome. It’s less commonly used in delicate baking, where unsalted butter gives more control over salt levels.

Which butter is good, salted or unsalted?

It depends on the use. Salted butter is better for spreading and everyday cooking, since the salt adds flavour. Unsalted butter is usually preferred for baking, as it lets you control the exact amount of salt in a recipe. Neither is “better” overall – just suited to different jobs.

Can you use salted butter instead of unsalted in baking?

Yes, in most recipes you can substitute salted for unsalted butter – just reduce or omit any added salt in the recipe to balance it out. For delicate bakes like sponges or pastry, some prefer unsalted for more precise control.

How long does salted butter last?

Salted butter typically keeps a little longer than unsalted, thanks to salt’s natural preserving effect. Always check the best-before date on the pack and keep it refrigerated below 5°C, as recommended on our packaging.

Can you freeze salted butter?

Yes, salted butter freezes well. Wrap it tightly or keep it in its original packaging, and use it within a few months for the best flavour and texture. Defrost in the fridge before use.

Is Cornish salted butter suitable for vegetarians?

Yes, our Cornish salted butter is suitable for vegetarians.
